How the YMCA Pool Helped Cindy Wood Breathe Again

Cindy Wood joined the Sewickley Valley YMCA in 2009, quickly finding a sense of community through group exercise classes. For years, the Y became a place where she enjoyed exercising and connecting with others.
“I loved Amy’s step class,” said Cindy.
When Life Takes an Unexpected Turn
In 2014, however, Cindy’s life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with lung cancer.
“After hearing the news, I felt a powerful sense of determination—determined not just to survive, but to be stronger and healthier,” she said.
Fortunately, Cindy didn’t require chemotherapy or radiation, but did have part of her lung removed. Refusing to let the life-saving surgery take away her freedom, Cindy turned to the Y’s warm water pool to help rebuild her strength. She began swimming twice a week and even attended water exercise classes.
Finding Strength in the Water
With each visit to the Y, she pushed herself to improve her endurance and her lung strength.
Slowly but steadily, swimming became her therapy. The road to recovery was long, and Cindy relied on supplemental oxygen for the next two years.
Over time, Cindy noticed changes she hadn’t anticipated. She was losing weight and gaining confidence, and her mind was clearer. The consistent Y visits provided a routine benefiting her both physically and mentally.
A Remarkable Recovery
After eight months of hard work, it was time for a follow-up with her doctor about her use of oxygen. Cindy shared her progress, and the results were incredible: she no longer needed supplemental oxygen!
To celebrate her full recovery—cancer-free and oxygen-free—Cindy traveled to Arizona and California with a friend to reconnect with friends and family.
“After cancer, I put in the work, but it was the Y that saved me,” said Cindy.
